How to survive your first week at the gym.
June 27, 2018
For any newcomer, the first week at the gym is that hardest. New faces, new equipment, and you’re probably thinking, everyone here knows exactly what they’re doing except me. But don’t fret, everyone had their first day at the gym once upon a time. And to make your first week a bit less intimidating, here’s some of our best tips.
Bring the right gear.
This goes beyond trainers. Keep yourself comfortable and dry with workout clothing that is absorbent or dri-fit. A post-workout change of clothing is optional but recommended, especially if you’re planning on showering — no one wants to pull sweaty clothes back on after getting clean! And lastly, don’t forget a water bottle and a towel (for you and the machines you use).
Take a mate.
Bringing a gym buddy along with you to help ease that first week anxiety. It doesn’t matter if your pal is a seasoned vet or a beginner, having their support will make everything a little less intimidating. And you can learn from each other, too. If you’re a CityFitness black card member, you can actually bring a guest for free anytime!
Questions? Just ask.
You know those people with the CityFitness shirts? Yeah, they’re actually here to help you. If you aren’t sure how to use a piece of equipment or want to check your form is right, just ask. Remember, no one is born knowing how to squat perfectly. We all had to ask.
Just do you!
Don’t worry about how much weight your neighbour is bench pressing or how fast the person on the treadmill next to you is going. Work with what you’re comfortable with so you don’t burn out too quickly or worse, injure yourself. Everyone has to start somewhere, so no matter your starting weight, pace or flexibility, the important thing is you’re doing it.
Keep coming back.
Last but definitely not least — just keep coming back. Pretty soon those first week jitters will be history and you’ll be well on your way to reaching your fitness goals.
See you soon!
